The assistant director (AD) is the right hand of the director and plays a crucial role in audiovisual production. Assistant directors assist in all tasks and functions related to the piece and are essential in ensuring the success of the shoot. Their work includes managing logistics and organising all aspects of filming and production, as well as coordinating the various departments of the team. Their responsibilities include drawing up the shooting schedule, executing it, and resolving any unforeseen issues that may arise during filming.
One of the main challenges for an AD is maintaining smooth and effective communication between the different departments that make up the production, ensuring that everyone is aligned with the project’s vision and that the needs for each scene are met. The AD is also tasked with maintaining order and efficiency on set, which is vital for the smooth running of the shoot and meeting deadlines.
